Poly Shopping (3 of 4) : Singapore Poly

Ok. This post is a little late as I’ve been busy. And I havn’t even typed out the proposal for having a badminton camp in March. Busy, busy, busy..

Ok, my thoughts about Singapore Poly.

Initial Impressions:
Very Good. The people helping out in the Open House were dressed in smart attire though I did see some ‘ah bengs’ amoung them. The buildings are mostly old, but like what I said for Nanyang, I’m not conplaining. Perhaps the only qualm I have about them is that I did feel lost in terms of what to do. Besides the ICT booth and the SPinnovex, there really wasn’t a whole lot to do.

Friendliness:
The people maning the ICT booth were not ’selling’ their school but I don’t know if that is a good point or a bad point. The students (mostly) looked civilised though there were a large number of groups of Chinese Speaking ‘ah bengs’. (No insult ment to anyone)

Campus:
BIG. As in REALLY BIG.

Course:
Course is pretty much the same, there was a talk by one of the lecturers on it. Ditto what I’ve said about Ngee Ann.

General Comments:
I guess its going to be a tough battle between Ngee Ann and Singapore Poly. I really don’t have a clue as to how to make the final decision. Perhaps I should code a program to output a random name, or perhaps I should draw up a comparison table to compare each factor of the 2 Polys. Ah, the choices we have to make in life. But for now, I’ll leave the choices to another day.

Next Poly: Temasek Poly (though the travelling time is substancially longer than that of the other 3)

Ok. I originally wanted to post about the Badminton Team pertaining to the first round of tournaments, but I’ll post it tomorrow after I return from training.

Poly Shopping (2 of 4) : Ngee Ann Poly

Ok. Went to Ngee Ann Poly today. Just came back not too long ago.

Initial Impressions:
Good. The people there are nice and I didn’t see much ‘mats and ah bengs’. The buildings are starting to show wear and tear. But I’m not conplaining. There were signs along the way to point me in the right direction and shuttle busses were provided for touring the schools.

Friendliness:

Went into the convention center and immediately someone approached to offer assistance. He led me outside to get the ‘goodie bag’ then back in to have a chat with the people at the ICT (InfoComm Technology). A very friendly lady (whom I later found out to be the Director of the ICT) explained the courses and achievements of the ICT. Cool..

Campus:
Big as usual (supposedly 70 olympic sized swimming pools). Like I said, the exterior of the buildings can’t compare to VS. But then again, I’m not judging based on how new the school is. Its got quite a bit of open spaces as well as spaces with tables for studying.

Course:
Course is pretty much the same, although this time, someone actually was there to explain futher. Attended the 1/2 hour ‘talk’ about the ICT, its courses and student life, and found it quite interesting. Although (as i said in the previous post) i think the first year will be slackish for me. But then again, I can use that time to learn even more languages.

General Comments:
A lot more impressed with Ngee Ann than with Nanyang.. So chances are Nanyang is out of the running.. The Library is super cool.. though if it had more computer books, it would be even better.. Generally I had a good feeling about Ngee Ann, perhaps the only thing thats nagging my mind is that it seems quite chinese orientated. I just hope, and from what I have seen, quite sure that the ppl there are not China ppl who can’t speak english..

Next up: Singapore Poly (3rd, 4th, 5th Feb)

Poly Shopping (1 of 4) : Nanyang Poly

Went to Nanyang Poly yesterday. Here I’ll list my thoughts, not so much to blog, but more for my reference when I’m making my choice later on in Feb.

Ok. To be fair and more organised, I’ll be rating the polys based on the same criteria. All offer the same course (more or less) and I’ll take the same time to travel there, so those 2 are not a factor.

Initial Impressions:
Bad. As I was walking into the campus, I had to hold my breath. Not because the campus was so awesome, but because there were about 3 groups of students smoking along the walkway.

Friendliness:
The Lecturers were very friendly, the students helping out in the open house were friendly enough, but the rest of the students ( comprising of mostly the hard core Mats and Ah Bengs) gave me a feeling of hostility. Though I must say that of all the students in the School of IT, i didn’t see any of those kind of people (thankfully).

Campus:
I shan’t comment on the size, since the polys in general are large. No. Make that huge.. In terms of facilities, its pretty much what anyone could ask for. I just think the gyms too small though..

Course:
The course I was looking at seemed interesting, although I did feel that it would pretty much be slackish for me in the first year as then they only teach the foundations of IT. The people in the course seem commited in what they were doing, and thats a good sign. Wasn’t overly impressed by the final year projects (no insult intended) as they appeared to be more like a project I would have to do in VS, but perhaps its just me.

General Comments:
I guess its ok, but I can’t really judge untill i’ve seen the other schools. But it sure didn’t blow me away. It has a McDonalds inside that sells its meals for almost $2 less, but thats not the point. Most of the areas in the campus require a “smart card” to access. While I guess this is good security-wise, I dun think its very efficient if you’re in a rush or if youre someone who likes to simplify things.

Next up: Ngee Ann Poly (going there 2molo)
