VS Sec 1 Camp - EDGE 07

I can’t blog about the whole camp, since I was (sadly) only there for campfire night + day 3. But I can say this: The VS Spirit @ Campfire was super strong. Woah. I’m like damn proud of the Sec 1s. Only 3 days into sporting the label of Victorians and already the flame is starting to burn in them.

I was initially afraid that as the standard (Spirit wise) of the new intake was slipping slightly over the course of the past few years, this years batch would reach the point of ‘disappointing’. But I was not disappointed.

One thing that was disappointing, however, was the fact that the EFI (External Freelance Instructors) built and fed the campfire (Zipline again somemore). That job has historically belonged to the Black shirts, whom should have had enough experience (through their various camps) to plan, build, execute and maintain a solid campfire. EFIs for the high elements I understand and expect, due to MOE’s requirements, but for campfire? A big no-no in my book.

Regardless, I still think it was a very successful camp and a great beginning to the Victorian Experience to come over the next 4 years for the Sec 1s. (Don’t believe me? Check out the blog at EDGE 2007 Blog)

Kudos to Mr Siow, the teachers and Black/Red shirts for the camp.

Heh heh, this year got good bargain lah… buy one get one free.

The reason why the Black Shirts didn’t do it was that the cost of the campfire wood and kerosene included the EFI building and maintaining the fire… so since the costing is about the same, why not? :)

It allowed the black shirts more time to do one critical thing- the shifting of benches and movement of classes which was much better this year. Not to mentioned, this year got FLASH games.

Any ideas for next year campfire?

I thought it was great that all the Black Shirts came down. Might be a good idea to print graduating years on the black shirts, that way we can see how many come and which batch they’re from.

    hmmm… what say you guys?

Haha.. Though I still think the Black shirts should have the responsibility of building the fire. I took home quite a few lessons from campfire building.. =)

Hmm.. I remember the fun I had building the ignition of campfires came from the challenge to do something totally unheard of.. Perhaps we could post that challenge to the next set of black shirts? =D

I think the shirt is a good idea, perhaps it could be incorporated into the current system whereby the black shirts get to design their own shirt, but keep at least one element ’standardised’? Just tossing the idea here but yupp, I think it would do much for batch (both inter and intra) unity and belonging.. hehe..

Yup good idea. Still remember the rocket that Shruki tried to convince me would fly as well. The one that actually impressed me the most was the time when you fellas (i.e. your batch)actually mananged to build a floating campfire when the Kluang River flooded while the rest of the external instructors looked on helplessly.
While that was not my camp and I was not involved in running it, I was damn proud of all you guys.

    Keep the flag flying
